World Egg Day: Global Egg Statistics

No matter where they live, almost everyone loves eggs. People the world over appreciate the egg’s natural nutrition, convenience, economy and versatility.

As the population increases worldwide, egg production does, too. Eggs are so popular that egg production is increasing more than the production of some other protein foods. According to the International Egg Commission, over the last 35 years, poultry meat and egg production increased faster than beef /veal or pigmeat production. In fact, egg production more than tripled! In 1970, hens around the globe produced 19,538,000 tons of eggs and, by 2005, this rose to 59,233,000 tons.

In 2005, the areas of the world producing the most eggs were Asia (60.4%), Europe (16.8%) and North and Central America (13.6%). These were followed by South America (5.1%), Africa (3.7%) and Oceania (0.4%).

China produces many, many more eggs than any other country. Together, China, India and Japan produce almost half of the entire world egg supply. In 2005, the top ten egg-producing countries produced 42,906,000 tons of eggs out of a total global egg production of 59,233,000. These countries were:

1. China - 41.1% 6. Mexico - 3.2%
2. USA - 9% 7. Brazil - 2.6%
3. India - 4.2% 8. France - 1.8%
4. Japan - 4.2% 9. Indonesia - 1.5%
5. Russia - 3.5% 10. Turkey - 1.4%

About 98% of the eggs produced are eaten in the country where they are produced. Only about 2% of eggs worldwide are exported to other countries.
