Making Plain Eggs Special

If you want to draw a straight line on an eggshell, wrap a rubber band around it. Just follow the line of the rubber band with your crayon, pen or brush. You can also use store-bought or homemade stencils to make letters or patterns. Just tape the stencil to the eggshell and draw or paint inside the lines of the design.

Or, cover an egg with rubber bands of different widths before you dip it into dye. The dye won't stick to any part of the eggshell under a tight band. Just like leaf-printed eggs, this is called resist dyeing. The dye resists sticking to whatever part of the eggshell is covered. You can use rubber bands to make striped, checked or plaid eggs.

Use a crayon or small "birthday cake" candle to write a name or message on an egg. Then dip it in dye. The dye won't stick wherever the egg is coated with wax from the crayon or candle. This is another method of resist dyeing.
