The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has updated the definition of “healthy” to align with current nutrition science and federal dietary guidance. The final rule was published December 27, 2024, and, without any edits, is effective April 28, 2025. With this update, eggs are now in good company with fruits and vegetables on the FDA’s list of healthy foods. Being recognized as a “healthy” food reaffirms the nutritional goodness that eggs provide and further establishes the role eggs play as an essential component of a healthy diet.

The FDA’s decision to classify eggs as “healthy” is a positive development for our industry and it opens new possibilities for marketing, education, and growth. We look forward to seeing the positive impact of this new “healthy” claim on our industry.

Below you’ll find an Overview of the FDA’s New Healthy Definition with details on the final rule, turnkey resources and handouts highlighting the role that eggs play in supporting overall health.
